Myths about Digital Scrapbooking

Many traditional scrapbookers resist the temptation to experiment with digital scrapping because of some prevalent myths about going digital. This article will debunk these notions and explain the advantages of dipping your toes in the digital scrapping world.

Myths about Digital Scrapbooking
Myths about Digital Scrapbooking
Digital Myth #1.
To create digital scrapbooks, I need to be a computer guru and learn complicated software.

Fact.
Today’s digital scrapbooking software is easier than ever to use- even for the amateur. Most programs offer free 30-day trial downloads, which is generally enough time to give it a try. And while it might take a little time to learn, you’ll find that the endless array of beautiful, innovative scrapbook designs and photo collage frames is well worth the minimal effort.

Digital Myth #2.
My digital scrapbooks will look amateurish because I lack experience with them.

Fact.
Even the beginner digital scrapper can produce professional-looking photo collages with the wide variety of easy-to-use scrapbook designs and collage frames available today. Electronically edited photos are of higher quality, computer text is consistently straight, and computer font is always legible. Generally, digital scrapbook pages look more professional than traditional creations and boost the pride scrappers feel in their projects.

Digital Myth #3.
Digital scrapbooking is more expensive than traditional scrapbooking.

Fact.
By switching to digital scrapbook designs, you can actually save yourself money … and time. If you already own a computer, all you need to buy is the scrapbook layout software and digital scrapbook kits, which are fairly inexpensive. The equivalent in paper, scissors, glue, embellishments and albums is far more expensive, and once you use them, they’re gone. Digital scrapbook designs and collage frames, on the other hand, can be used indefinitely. Think of the money you’ll save on gas driving to and from the craft stores, and the money you could save on gifts by giving personalized photo collages to friends and family.

Digital Myth #4.
Switching to digital scrapbook designs will limit my creativity.

Fact.
You can take your creativity to exciting new levels with the variety of digital scrapbook designs and collage frames available now. Choose any design you like and turn it into just about anything you want. You can mix and match or create your own unique styles. Adjust the colors, sizes, patterns, arrangements … add audio and even video… your options are limitless.

Digital Myth #5.
I don’t have time to learn how to make digital scrapbooks.

Fact.
Today’s digital scrapbooking software programs are so user-friendly and intuitive that they make learning them a breeze. Once you get the hang of it, digital scrapbooking is a great timesaver. Correcting mistakes, editing, moving items around and revising are much easier and quicker to do digitally than they are by hand. You can size and resize your backgrounds and photo collage frames with a few simple mouse clicks and create beautiful keepsakes in no time.

Digital Myth #6.
I need to own a digital camera to create digital scrapbooks.

Fact.
Even if you only have a film camera, you can still create digital scrapbooks by scanning your images onto a computer or having your film images put on a CD. And you can finally put to use those electronic photos your friends and family members have e-mailed to you. Of course, with today’s digital camera prices going down all the time, you may find you’d like to buy a digital camera anyway!

Digital Myth #7.
If I move to digital scrapbooks, I’ll have to give up the traditional art of scrapbooking and the social and bonding aspects that come with joining my friends and family in making scrapbooks.

Fact.
On the contrary, digital scrapbooking broadens social circles. Many digital scrappers get together to share their digital resources and knowledge about editing programs. They go to scrapbook conventions and meet others in online digital scrapbooking chat rooms. Plus, you can take advantage of the digital scrapbook’s ability to help you keep in touch with faraway friends and relatives via e-mail, Web sites and easily printed copies of scrapbook pages that you can mail to them. You can also burn them to CDs and DVDs.

Of course, you can still make traditional albums and consider integrating your digital scrapbook designs into them. And as you learn new techniques and tricks digitally, you’re apt to spark your creativity with traditional scrapbooking.

You don’t need to become an expert digital scrapbooker overnight. Start out small by making a simple digital photo album, then work your way up to a full-fledged scrapbook. Happy scrapping!

Finding unique photos online can solve your problem. Everyone has that moment while creating digital scrapbook pages where they wish they could include a celebrity to give their pages a comedic or glamorous tone. “Oh, if only I could Photo Shop Brad and Angelina into my digital scrapbook, these scrapbook pages would be perfect,” is not an uncommon thought.

Or, maybe you need a picture of a business to beef up your scrapbook pages. Perhaps you just took a trip to Hawaii and were having so much fun drinking the frozen lava flows that you forgot to take a picture of the restaurant that was a key part of your trip. You wish you had the picture on file to include it in your digital scrapbook and are kicking yourself that you do not.

Well, there are solutions to these problems. Many web sites can help you add to your scrapbooking crafts with the pictures they already have posted. It’s super easy (but not always legal, so don’t stop reading yet) to snap up all the photos you want for your digital scrapbooks, right clicking them and adding them to your Save As pile. Once you have the shot of the restaurant in Hawaii you were patronizing it’s easy to use your scrapbooking tools to jazz it up.

Many of the online software programs you buy support this feature. They can even help with screenshot importing, allowing you to take screenshots and paste them in without having to pull up the Paint site. This makes it easy to pull up all of the visual information you need to make your digital scrapbooking layouts unique.

However, before copying anyone’s work, it’s critical to ask for permission. Although this practice of beefing up your scrapbooking pages with online photos will probably not get you in hot water or the clink, it’s a best practice to get permission before nabbing any of the photos or sites off of the web.

To do this, get in touch with the site that posted the pictures or page. If the site is that restaurant you ate at in Hawaii, your odds are good the site won’t care if you use it for free scrapbooking. But if it’s a place with a copyrighted photo of Angie and Brad, for example, you might get the turn down – and won’t even be able to offer to pay.

If you can’t get permission to use the photo you want, check stock photography sites for similar options. These sites are awesome to find pictures to use for your scrapbooking pages. Sometimes, you will have to pay a small fee and yes, this could cut into your free scrapbooking budget. If the picture is Bran or Angelina, it just might be worth it.

Digital Scrapbook - The New Rage

Digital Scrapbook - The New Rage
To avoid being typical, dig just a little bit deeper to find your creative scrapbook themes instead of just relying on the pre-themed digital scrapbooking design and layouts.
If all of your digital scrapbooks layout and design have started to look alike, it's time to move onto that next level and all important step in digital scrapbooking - creating themes within your scrapbook pages!

If you have ever gone to a good theme party, you probably knew just what to expect the moment the invitation arrived. This is because every detail of a theme is woven into every detail of the party. So, if the theme of the party was Hawaiian, your invitation probably had something to do with hula girls, pineapples, palm trees or beach. The party itself probably had similar design and decorations, served tropical drinks and Hawaiian style food.

Creating a digital scrapbook with a theme works in the same way. Your audience will know just what to expect from your creative scrapbooking, based on the scrapbooking crafts you choose and the digital scrapbooking ideas. Here are some tips and tricks for maximizing theme work in your digital scrapbooks.

Get Creative

When you start working with themes for your scrapbooking, you will quickly discover that many of the scrapbook templates already work around a theme. For example, if your sister just had a baby, creating a project filled with baby scrapbook pages and layout is easy, because most of the materials out there are pre-designed for this type of theme.

Instead of being typical theme and design, consider basing your theme around a more original aspect of the baby. For example, if everyone joked that the baby will be a movie super start because she had such a piercing scream, then way not go with a Hollywood theme? If the baby is named something you could create a theme around with scrapbooking tools, such as Rose or Sunshine, create your theme around that topic. To avoid being typical, dig just a little bit deeper to find your creative scrapbook themes instead of just relying on the pre-themed digital scrapbooking design and layouts.

Find the Materials to Support It

Even though you are going to branch out on your own in some of the scrapbook page layouts, be certain that you can find the materials to support it. Many of the free scrapbooking sites have unique materials for downloads, as do the areas where you can purchase from scrapbook supplies.

Window shop for your supplies before settling on a pre-define theme. Although digital scrapbooking has been around for years, not every creative idea you come up with will be fully supported by the software.

Create an Umbrella Theme

Another clever way to work up a theme within your scrapbook pages is by creating an umbrella theme. For example, the theme of the book might be Christmas and each page has a different theme that matches with that category such as the Twelve Days of Christmas. Your twelve page book would hit each of the days by various design and layout.

Now that you understand a little more of the fun you could use your digital scrapbooking ideas, go out there and start using themes. Playing around with these types of ideas can help get your creative juices pumping and maintain that Wow factor for your scrapbook projects.

An Overview Of Digital Scrapbooking

What is digital scrapbooking?

Digital scrapbooking has evolved from the age-old craft of cutting and pasting bits of paper, fabric or photographs. Rather than going to the store to buy glue and appropriate material, graphics software enables you to create layouts which display special moments in your family's or friends' history.

Developments in technology (digital cameras in particular) have spawned a new generation of scrapbooking artists, thus increasing the popularity of digital scrapbooking. It's easier to create layouts this way than to print photos for traditional photo albums, and that's not the only advantage, as you'll soon discover.

An Overview Of Digital Scrapbooking

You can create digital photobooks loaded with different colours, fonts, banners, images, drawings, newspaper clippings and certificates. You will be able to share the scrapbooks quickly and easily with people far and wide.

This variation on a common hobby is gaining momentum and can be undertaken with very basic computer skills and easy-to-use graphics software. If it's more stylish and elaborate results you're after, you can use a professional graphics program.

What are the benefits?

As mentioned above, digital scrapbooking is more convenient than its traditional alternative, but that's not all it has to offer.

Your scrapbooks can be visible to anyone, anywhere, anytime because designs can be shared online, through email, on CD or DVD. This also means there are no bulky albums taking up room.

The process can be extremely simple and inexpensive. Templates found in software or on the web can give a homely and craft-like feel, and they're free to download in some cases. Such templates may be ideal for people wanting to spend little money and time, and yet compose attractive scrapbooks.

You can also unleash the artist in you! Digital scrapbooking really gives you the chance to realise your creativity with some software packages boasting built-in photo editing features. These will quickly add effects to your images or correct issues such as colour balance and red-eye.

Another great benefit is that you can alter elements on your pages such as backgrounds, photos and text, as well as adding to, or taking from your scrapbook at any time. There isn't any hassle and mess that comes with ripping out physical items and glueing bits and pieces back in.

How do I create a digital scrapbook?

Templates are readily available and essentially mean the hard work is done for you. All you need to do is add your own photos and text - perfect for beginners. Or if you fancy yourself as a bit of a professional artist, you can fully customise scrapbooks yourself and take advantage of advanced features like blending, layers and masks.

A page is typically made up of background papers - one paper can cover the entire page or several composed together can create a layered effect. Scrapbooking overlays are also frequently used because they cover the page but leave space for you to add photos and elements.

These elements, or embellishments, enhance the layout and are the focal point of your scrapbook. Many websites sell them, some offer them for free download, and you can even create elements yourself. Some scrapbooking programs enable you to do this without using any additional software.

Digital scrapbooking has seen a real surge in popularity, largely due to its effectiveness and convenience. What's more, there's an abundance of free online resources and video tutorials on how it's done to get you started.

Scrapbooks, Using Punches to Save Money

Scrapbooks, Using Punches to Save Money
Scrapbooks, Using Punches to Save Money
After a while, scrapbooking tends to become expensive, especially when you consider all of the papers, embellishments, and extra items that you need. To cut down on the costs of my albums, I looked at ways to save money, yet producing beautiful one of a kind layouts, cards and altered items. One way that saves money is using punches in your creating.

Now, before you rush out and buy a bunch of punches you do not need, start to look at basic shapes you tend to use a lot. This will help you to save money as you find punches that are in those shapes. Circles and ovals are hard to cut out by hand, they are better if you use a punch or die cut machine! By using a paper cutter, or scissors and a ruler if you need to, you can easily cut a square shape, therefore saving the need to purchase things that are not cost effective.

Here are a few ideas that will help you get started in using punches more:
  • Layer a circle or square with another punch shape to create a unique look on the bottom of your layout
  • Use multiple squares layered as a border with different punch shapes in them
  • Put on a tag with a bit of ribbon, fibers, beads or other items to create a one of a kind tag
  • Cut a heart shape in half to use as leaves with flowers
  • Learn to layer and use different shapes together to create your own style of embellishments
  • Add a quick saying stamp with the same theme punch to create a quick and easy card, such as a balloon with a birthday stamp
  • Corner punches in designs can be used with card making to create darling layered cards
  • That same corner punch can be used in scrapbooking to focus a photo that is dear to your heart
  • Flower punches with a button in the middle to create wonderful one of a kind embellishments
  • Take a balloon punch, cut off the tail, making it an Easter Egg instead

Must have punches:
  • A heart punch in a variety of sizes and shapes
  • A balloon punch in a few sizes
  • Flower punches in different shapes
  • A corner rounder punch
  • A couple of your style of corner punches to use in scrapbooking and cards
  • A couple of leaves
  • Stars in various sizes
  • A sun punch

Tips when purchasing punches:
  • Make sure to utilize your coupons from craft stores such as Michaels and Joann’s to save money on your favorites
  • Take a thick mouse pad to use when punching out a lot of pieces, this will help to alleviate a bit of sound
  • Place a wood piece on top of the punch to help your hands out when punching your pieces out
  • Use a set of tweezers if you have a hard time gripping or picking up the punched out piece
  • If your punches get so they can’t cut well, try cutting a sheet of aluminum foil to sharpen the blade a bit
  • Try sharing punches with your friends and family that create, each of you get different “extra” punches
  • Make sure when you go to crops to take your scraps, find people who have punches you do not have to punch out a few pieces in colors you could use

Punches can be a lot of fun, especially if you do not have a lot of money to buy stickers all the time. Use them with stamps to create a unique card, and use them with your scraps to save you money. Yes, you have the investment of the punch itself, but overall, the savings is much greater than the cost itself. I am all about saving money; it is about getting your memories out on paper…not about spending the most in your supplies!

Scrapbooking Companies Reach Out to Working Women With Female Business Stationery

A new untapped market has evolved for scrapbooking companies, but it might not be what you think. With a struggling economy happening worldwide it is no guess why many women are having to leave home and work to ease financial burdens in the home. Although I believe this is not a good thing for our society it has almost become a necessity for most families. As more women enter the work field or venture out on their own the need for feminine women’s stationery has become a new product that is slowly evolving, but soon is predicted to become a high demand. Even though these hard working women are surrounded by males, the brain for females is still wired the same with a natural instinct to be feminine. Having said that with more women engaged in the business world than ever before, the need for sophisticated, feminine women’s stationery is needed.

Marcie Mower, female entrepreneur and owner of an online scrapbooking store says, “Even in this age of electronic mail, I still love sending notes on personal stationery. It’s the business equivalent of a trendy bag and shoes. Just because I am a business woman doesn’t mean I have to use boring off the rack stationery. Finding an elegant and classy note card to pen a personal note to a friend or business associate is hard to find.” Marcie is correct finding this type of stationery is not easy.

But scrapbooking paper supply companies like Die Cuts With A View have solved Mower’s problem and other business women like her with the release of elegant and colorful A2 Box of Cards and envelopes. This women stationery comes in many styles and patterns to choose from depending on the season, holiday, mood, and so much more making an employed woman feel female in a corporate office of men. The main benefit is there is something to match any woman’s personality. “I am thrilled with DCWV’s new release of note cards! They are classy and fun. The texture of the cards makes them appear expensive and they are such a good value”, says Mower. A Box of Cards are made of high quality textured cardstock and come 40 cards to a box, which keeps affordability reasonable for the market and still has that professional look. Like DCWV and other scrapbooking stores this is critical for maintaining business relationships of trust.

There has never been a need for business women stationery more than now. As unemployment rises and more women are forced to leave the home and enter the world of corporate America, femininity always exists. Although women stationery has existed for many years it hasn’t been till recent that scrapbooking companies like Die Cuts With A View are out to improve the selection. Scrapbooking designers know what each business woman needs to keep this female creativity and that is through beautiful stationery. Lets just say it is a woman’s way of putting a tint of feminine touch on corporate society.

Distinctive Digital Scrapbooking Downloads

Distinctive digital scrapbooking downloads can seriously enhance your layout design, save you time, and reduce your hobby costs. If you’ve not already figured out how, read on!

Consider this scenario:
You just started digital scrapbooking and downloaded a few papers, kits and templates Your friend recently mentioned there are lots of sites with freebies You’ve Googled “digital scrapbook free” and found a bunch of sites but which one(s) to choose? How can you tell if they are any good? You’ve already spent quite a bit of time and money on digital products, but found the print quality wasn’t what you’d hoped for, and not all templates could easily be personalized with the embellishments you wanted to use.

Skills you need:
Firstly, you need to be able to find and download suitable digital products with good quality design and images you can use easily for your own purposes.

This means being clear about what type of digital product you are looking for. Some downloadable products are designed to be printed for use in traditional scrapbooking projects. The main benefits are the convenience of download delivery and low cost but remember the price of paper and ink!

Other products are designed for use in computer scrapbooking projects where the page layout is designed and created using software, and the resulting pages or album can be shared in print and online.

Digital papers, sketches, digital templates, layouts and digital scrapbooking kits are all different types of product, and serve different purposes. For example, you can get page layout ideas from sketches, which you can re-create in your scrapbooking software, and use in either digital or paper projects.

But with a downloadable digital scrapbooking template, you can open the file in your scrapbooking package or photo-editing software, add your photos, embellishments and journaling to complete your personalized layout, and so get off to a fast start with your project.

Why JPG and PNG?
Have you ever wondered why some items come in JPG and PNG versions? You’re not alone!

But there is a straight forward answer…

JPG files are often used for backgrounds and for printable digital products such as alphabets, embellishments, or transparencies to be used in paper scrapbooks. The resulting print quality should be good.

Digital scrapbookers use PNG files because these can be “stacked” up to create multi-layer scrapbooking layouts, just as you would with physical products. Its the transparent background that PNG files have which enables this stacking without any background being visible.

However, PNG files seem to present a challenge to some types of printer. So if you want to print your PNG layout files, you may get better results printing PNG files from your photo-editing software, or even just importing to MS Word and printing from there.

Secondly, you need to be able to use your photo-editing software effectively to create your page layouts.

For usage details of your software, you’ll need to spend some time working through tutorials, but here’s what to do when you start by downloading a digital scrapbooking template:

Downloads often come compressed as zip files. These have been saved up in a special way that reduces the files’ size, so making them a little quicker to download. To use them, you must “unzip” them to restore the files to their original state.

Download your file to your hard drive, then copy your zipped files to a disk for backup. In Windows XP, right click the file on your hard drive and choose “Extract All” from the pop-up menu. For other platforms, just Google “unzip files” and you’ll find links to various unzip utilities. If you are a MAC user, make sure that you get one that is MAC compliant.

Then you can open the template in your photo-editing program and add your papers, photos and embellishments to get the best of your digital scrapbooking downloads.
